Concordia, UNL, Wesleyan student clubs host week of events in support of social justice

The student-run Concordia University, Nebraska club Lighthouse: Illuminate to Liberate is hosting a 5K walk/run called Run to Restore on April 16, 2016, to raise awareness for human trafficking, both domestically and globally. The race starts at 9 a.m., with check-in at 8 a.m. at Walz Human Performance Complex on campus. Registration is available online at The cost is $27.50.

“Lighthouse thought a 5K would be a great way for the community to get involved, have a fun family event, raise awareness and see what we as a club are doing,” said club co-founder Liz Schmidt. “It's also great to know all the proceeds are going towards the International Justice Mission, the non-profit organization our club is paired with, who directly provides resources to victims of social injustices.”

 Lighthouse is partnering with the student clubs at University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Nebraska Wesleyan University who also support International Justice Mission to hold a week-long awareness campaign called Justice Week. 

Justice Week Activities

April 11: “Stand for Freedom” awareness efforts, with signs posted on campus and photos taken for social media

April 12: Students will travel to UNL’s campus to take part in a candlelight vigil and worship hour

April 13: “Lighthouse” will be featured at Praise!, Concordia’s Wednesday evening worship service, at 9 p.m.

April 14: Students will travel to the Green Space, an outdoor area on UNL’s campus, for a Remedy Drive concert

April 16: 5K “Run to Restore” will be held in Seward, Nebraska

International Justice Mission focuses on social justice issues of the world such as modern-day slavery. The goals of the club include raising awareness throughout the Concordia campus and community, raising leaders to become advocates and raising money for the causes.

According to, International Justice Mission (IJM) is a global organization that protects the poor from violence throughout the developing world. IJM partners with local authorities to rescue victims of violence, bring criminals to justice and strengthen justice systems. IJM is a non-profit organization that was highlighted for “making a difference” by U.S. News & World Report.
